Church Music - background

Church Music as Genre

Musical Genres are defined in many different ways, and may include many different sub-genres.  The highly compound genre of “Church Music”, defined as the music used during Christian worship services and devotions, was proposed by the academic committee of McMaster’s School of the Arts as a good choice both for study and for illustration of the points to be made in the Genre Implosion project.

This page will feature a brief history of Church Music, and a number of illustrations of the application of the theories of Adorno, McLuhan and Baudrillard to explain the function and behaviour of genre.
